No one knows the viral life more than Jeano Rustico Cruz, a copywriter from Y&R Philippines, who overnight became a pun-tastic sensation that has been shared more than 35,000 times all over FaceBook. It all began with a friend’s simple suggestion of compiling all his puns after a trip from Korea, and the rest was history.

“Filipinos on the internet love puns. They love hearing them [and] they love making them,” shares Cruz, “It adds color and fun to our lives as well as include them in our day-to-day conversations even offline.” His puns have surely helped in being a copywriter for a well-known agency. The viral experience has been quite mixed, according to Cruz, as while it has guided in his philosophy in creating social media content, clients often expect it to spread as soon as it’s posted.

“[Puns] help brands with playful identities [since it makes things light, memorable, and injects a little fun], but shouldn’t be used with those that need to push credibility. When you’ve matched the use of puns to a perfect brand, it helps strengthening the brand’s reach to an audience,” was his advice to young communications students on puns for online platforms.
